During a 4 night possession of track in Finnieston Tunnel, Glasgow, RBA have completed Non Destructive Testing (NDT) Trials on two sections of concrete slab track for Network Rail. Working with McFarland Associates, four different types of NDT were carried out on sections of track suspected of suffering from settlement to determine the extent of settlement and likely causes. The NDT techniques were backed up by traditional physical techniques to confirm the findings of the NDT.
David Ellis, Managing Director of RBA said, “I’m pleased that we have been able to carry out trials of new and emerging NDT techniques which allow a swift and safe analysis of the slab track and its foundations. This is particularly important in the short timescales often available to work on the railway. The non-destructive nature of the techniques used eliminates the need to carry out drilling and coring which is time consuming, expensive, and has noise and vibration risks that need to be managed.”
